What to prepare for the Machu Picchu hike

Machu Picchu is one of the best places for tourists. Primarily because of its remarkable structure and rich history. However, the tourist spot has a distinct characteristic that you must know and prepare for. Machu Picchu is situated on top of a mountain. There are various challenges in hiking to it as well as sights along the way. Get in several hikes before you go.

Here are some the quick tips you need to know before going to Machu Picchu:

Book 6 months before your preferred travel time.

Thousands of tourists are allowed to enter Machu Picchu in a day. However, the Inca trail, arguably the most scenic trail does not allow as many travelers. In order to enjoy the trail during your desired month, you must book in advance. Especially if you want to go at peak season.

Train before going on Machu Picchu hike.

As previously mentioned, the journey to Machu Picchu requires a lot of walking and hiking. It is best to prepare for the strenuous activity. You wouldn’t want to quit in the middle of the hike. It’s best to train your body beforehand and get in several hikes before you go.

Prepare for the altitude.

The Machu Picchu elevation is not for the faint of heart so getting ready for it is essential. A good area to acclimate yourself before getting to the top is Ollantaytambo where you can stay for a day or two.

Use the right gear.

The climate in the trail is fairly constant all throughout the year with a high of almost 20° C during midday and going down to about 4° C at night. Bringing along waterproof jackets in case of rain and plenty of trekking clothes will keep you well prepared for any challenges. You’ll trek through a number of grasslands and trails so bringing insect repellant is also a good idea.

Be prepared for camping.

Though there a lot of short stay accommodations and hostels along the way, you might want to bring along camping equipment especially if you are out to get to Machu Picchu as early as possible. Bring along a lightweight sleeping bag, a blowout pillow, a fleece jacket and comfortable socks as well.

These are some of the important tips you’ll need before getting on the actual hike to Machu Picchu. Just take note that along with all of the things that you need to prepare before the hike, the most important thing is to enjoy the scenic views and the people you will meet along the trail. It is a wonderful experience to enjoy while preparing your eyes for the prize: Machu Picchu.
