Huchuy Picchu peak showed up as this recent draw in Machu Picchu Inca City. Right beside that famous Huayna Picchu hill. Tops out at roughly 2,497 meters, or 8,192 feet. Hike lasts about an hour. Up there, ruins views slam into you.
What is Huchuy Picchu Mountain?
Smallest hill inside Machu Picchu ruins, Cusco area, Peru. Quechua translates to little mountain.
Incans cut stone stairs up Huchuy Picchu, much like on Huayna Picchu. These days a hike, say an hour, fresh thrill for Machu Picchu stops. Summit gives full sweeps of everything. Gets intense thinking on Incan builders.

Location and Access
You enter through the same door as Huayna Picchu, in the Sacred Rock area. From there, a detour after about 1 km (give or take) branches off toward Huchuy Picchu. The main trail continues on to the taller peak.
The Hike
- Distance: about 1 km, mostly uphill
- Duration: around 1 hr-ish
- Trail: dozens of uneven Inca-built steps
It’s easy enough for most travelers. Just stone, sweat and… wow. Watch your footing—some steps tilt sharply.
Panoramic Views
At the top you catch scattered ruins: the Temple of the Sun, the Three Windows, even bits of the Main Plaza far below. I’m not sure if the morning fog ever hides the Sacred Rock, but when it clears, the sight stops you cold.
Flora and Fauna
Here grows cedar, queñual, molle, ferns—and orchids, over 200 species, approximately. Butterflies flutter everywhere. If you’re lucky, you’ll glimpse the cock of the rocks. Llamas wander in the City; bears and Andean deer stay hidden below.
