We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 5:00 AM and begin an approximately two-hour drive through the South Valley. Along the way, we will stop for breakfast before continuing to the trailhead, where your guide will provide a short safety briefing and explain how to manage the high altitude.
The uphill hike to the main Rainbow Mountain viewpoint takes approximately two hours. The exact duration depends on your walking pace and acclimatization. Our guide will keep the group at a comfortable pace and make short stops along the route to explain the local geography, nearby communities, and traditional way of life.
During the hike, you will pass highland farms and see llamas and alpacas grazing near the trail. The route is wide but unpaved, so it can be dusty during the dry season and slippery during the rainy season. Waterproof hiking shoes and trekking poles are recommended.
If you prefer not to complete the entire ascent on foot, local residents offer horse rentals near the trailhead for an additional fee. The horse covers most of the uphill route, but the final section must be completed on foot. Prices and availability are arranged directly with the horse owners.
After approximately two hours of hiking, you will reach the main Vinicunca viewpoint at about 5,100 meters or 16,732 feet above sea level. You will have time to rest, take photographs, and enjoy views of the colored mountain formations and Ausangate, the highest mountain in the Cusco region.
Your guide will explain how Vinicunca’s colors were formed and share information about the cultural importance of the surrounding mountains. Depending on the weather, timing, and walking pace, you may also add an optional 45-minute hike toward the Red Valley viewpoint. Ask us before departure to confirm the additional entrance fee and current trail conditions.
After visiting the viewpoint, we will begin the descent to the trailhead. The downhill walk takes approximately one hour, and our transportation will be waiting for the group at the end of the trail.
We will then travel to Ccolca for lunch before starting the two-hour return drive to Cusco. Hotel drop-off is expected between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, depending on traffic, weather, and the group’s hiking pace.
